Top 10 Kid-Friendly Scary Movies

Looking for a family-friendly Halloween Movie that’s scary, but not too scary? We’ve got you covered with our top 10 favorites – in no particular order. Here we identified which kid-friendly movies are rated G and which ones are rated PG (for older kids) to help you decide what’s appropriate for your family.

Ever wonder how movie ratings got started? Our current rating system was implemented in 1968, when the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) defined a set of rating codes to help parents decide what’s appropriate for children and teenagers to watch. Over the years, new ratings were introduced while others were redefined, but today most people are familiar with the five ratings: G, PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17. Surprisingly, filmmakers are not required to place a rating on their movie, but most movie theaters won’t run films that don’t have ratings, and many publications and channels won’t advertise unrated movies.

While the rating system has changed several times since 1968, today the current ratings are:

  • Rated G - General Audiences. All ages admitted.
  • Rated PG - Parental Guidance Suggested. Some material may not be suitable for children.
  • Rated PG-13 - Parents Strongly Cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
  • Rated R - Restricted. Persons under 17 are not admitted unless accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.
  • Rated NC-17 - No one 17 and under admitted.
